*SAPS appeals for help in finding missing K9 ‘Floppy’* 13 Jun 2026 | Shadley Nash Eastern Cape police are appealing to the public for help in locating a missing K9 patrol dog, B8088 Floppy, following an armed robbery incident in Mdantsane, in KuGompo City on Friday. Police spokesperson, Brigadier Nobutu Gantana, said the drama began when three men armed with guns robbed the Nzuzo Primary School in Unit 16 of 20 laptop computers and 15 cell phones. She said suspects fled in the headmaster’s black Peugeot vehicle, which was later recovered by members of the Mdantsane Flying Squad about 1km from the school. Gantana said the K9 unit was summoned after the suspects were seen running into bushes next to a nearby dam and the police handler and ‘Floppy’ cornered the suspects in dense bush. “When the suspects ran further into thick vegetation, the handler released the dog to apprehend them. Shortly thereafter, the handler heard a suspect shouting from inside the bush, followed by the sound of gunshots,” Gantana said. She said reinforcements arrived to assist and upon entering the bush, the dog could not be located, and the three suspects had fled and remained at large. “Air and ground searches were conducted by SAPS members supported by members of the public who voluntarily prived extra support in terms of drones. “Despite extensive efforts, the search was called off at 17:30 due to poor visibility. It will resume tomorrow (Saturday) at first light. “We are deeply concerned for the safety of our K9, Floppy, who was bravely performing his duty,” Gantana said. ‘Floppy’ is described as a patrol breed, wearing a SAPS-issued harness at the time of disappearance. “Anyone with information is requested to contact or the nearest police station.” The investigation into the armed robbery incident at the school and the subsequent disappearance of the dog and escape of the suspects is ongoing.
